Wireless Trends in Healthcare
Not long ago, we conducted a survey with 237 healthcare professionals and HIMSS members, representing organizations of all sizes and yielding insight into mobile technology and wireless trends within the industry. Over 97% of the respondent organizations used wireless and wireless data applications in their daily operation. Of those using wireless data applications, roughly 85% are doctors and nurses but there is also data to support high use levels by clinical and administrative staff.
With 67% of the respondents indicating that their wireless solutions were a “Very Important Must Have,” for both their mobile clinicians and their overall enterprise mobility initiatives, it’s clear that wireless has come to stay for clinicians in all types of organizations. In fact, respondents indicated several key benefits including: employee satisfaction, improved patient outcomes and an overall increase in productivity.
With these benefits comes some concerns. The introduction of wireless to the healthcare industry has also opened the door for issues in security, consistency of Wi-Fi transmission and employee frustration with less-than-seamless wireless applications. It is clear that managing these issues will be important to enabling organizations to use wireless in an even broader fashion as well as maintain and increase the many benefits.
